about

Portmanteaux’s “General Eclectic” is a an all instrumental 6-track mini album. Tunes include: Struttin’(on Some Riffs), which is a Meters-style groove with an alto sax solo (reminiscent of Maceo Parker) blown over the top of some driving drumming and bongos! Firefly is an organ-led Latino tune, introduced by the hysterical commentary of an announcer calling the scoring of a goal in a Columbian soccer match. Rastafrican is a trombone-led African reggae tune. Here is the News is a Booker T and the MGs organ-led instrumental with a New Orleans ‘walking down the road’ feel in the Outro. Millie Small’s Township Jive is perfused with a South African township/Jamaican ska feel with trombone/sax-led choruses. Letter to Jane has a Booker T and the MGs feel, albeit a country-soul one, with Byrds-style guitar sounds in the choruses and soulful soprano sax sounds.

This the first CD by Portmanteaux. It was recorded between 2002-2005 at Salt Studios, East Brighton, Melbourne, Australia.
